1. I have talked about this topic among friends in the past and I took the stance that drug testing is not a wise corporate policy. The reason why I say this is because not all professions require to be drug tested. I believe that jobs that require employees to operate machinery and or drive a vehicle should be drug tested in order to prevent law suits. However, there are some professional fields that require a lot of stress and may even have a high suicide rate, which some drugs could actually maintain from happening. It also does not make sense for fields such as retail to be drug tested because of a financial standpoint. These employees are not at any sort of risk if they have a drug/prescription in their system, therefore it would be a waste of money for a company to pay for these employees to be drug tested.
2. Workplace drug testing is not a wise or even required policy for any company. If an employee can meet normal productivity expectations then the argument could be made that drug use is irrelevant. If the employeeâs productivity begins to wavier then the employer has the right to warn, discipline, or terminate them at that time, but the key in that statement is that the justification is based on performance, not the use of drugs. âThere are many potential … causes of poor productivity, such as family problems or emotional problems or dysfunctional personalities, that collectively have a stronger impact on employee outcomes than drug use per se,â (Pinsker, 2015). It will become an invasion of privacy issue if we grant employers the right to discover the cause of poor performance, such as relationship difficulties, financial trouble, or any other countless reasons for poor performance. It must be clear that the justification for any disciplinary actions be based on poor job performance, not the use of drugs or any other insignificant factor. The employer does not have the right to dig into an employeeâs personal life to determine the cause of poor job performance.

I do believe it makes sense for manufacturing jobs, doctors and drug sales reps. Industries where the use of drugs may come into play. Putting someone that tests positive for drugs in an industry surrounded by drugs might not make sense. With all of that said, someone could stay clean long enough to get a job and pass the screening. The big issue is making sure that an employee does not come to work under the influence.
