ENG 3U Book Club
During each Book Club Meeting your group members will discuss
thoughts and reactions to the
events, characters and themes of the novel. Each Book Club Meeting will focus on one third of
the novel and have a specific focus. You are to be prepared with the reading completed and your
Ticket of Admission
to be allowed to participate in the Book Club. If you dont come prepared,
you will not be allowed to participate and you will lose the opportunity to gain the insight of your
peers and prepare for the final evaluation.

In preparation for this book club write a

Dialogue Exchange Reading Journal ad

dressed to a member of your book club group. Express your preliminary responses to the
novel in your letter and make
specific reference to details in the novel
, including narrative
style, character, setting and mood, conflicts, flashback, tone, imagery, presentation, and
rhetorical devices. Include at least two quotes from the novel in your analysis.

with direct reference (at least two quotations in

; specific incidents) to the
novel.

Respond to the section of text read in each of the following roles:
Summarizer
Write a synopsis of the plot and make some predictions as to what happens
next.
Questioner
Ask five discussion-provoking questions and make detailed notes responding
to them.
Connector
Make five connections between the text and your own life/other texts/the
world.
Literary Luminary
Select five important quotations and explain why you think they are
significant. Analyze use of language and any text strategies or literary devices.
Homework:
Write a response journal of approximately 300 words about 5 specific things
you have learned or cleared up about the novel as a result of your second Book Club Meet

ing. Reflect on how Book Clubs have affected your reading experience. Think about what

Identify three topics and
three themes that you develop from each of these topics
of
the novel. Next, find
three supporting quotes
per theme (for a total of nine quotes). Be
prepared to justify your choice of quotes (how they relate to the theme). Discuss thesis
